Daryush Shayegan forged already thirty years ago, following the Khomeinist revolution, the concept of "ideologization of religion", taken up by many experts to account for political Islam and its dead ends. He also thought of the notion of the individual no longer in terms of unique origin and belonging but as a patchwork of multiple identities and describes the contemporary world no longer by opposing East and West, modernity and tradition but by analyzing this " thought of the in-between ", the amalgamations, the distortions, the ruptures and the connections which cross each being in all places of the planet.
